Iona University Athletics

Donald E. Walsh Field at Rice Oval

Donald E. Walsh Field at Rice Oval is home to the Iona University softball program. The facility features two field-level dugouts, bullpens along both baselines and a batting cage down the right field line. The field dimensions measure 190 feet to both foul poles and 220 feet to center field.

The inaugural game at Rice Oval Softball Field was played on April 6, 2008, when Iona University swept a doubleheader against Siena. Prior to the contest, Director of Athletics Patrick Lyons and University President Br. James A. Liguori joined Edward F. Arrigoni ’56, ’91H in throwing out the ceremonial first pitch. Lyons thanked supporters for their generosity in helping make the facility a reality.

The facility was renamed Donald E. Walsh Field at Rice Oval for the 2014 season in honor of Donald E. Walsh ’66, recognizing his lasting impact on Iona University Athletics.

A loyal supporter for more than 30 years, Walsh helped grow the Goal Club—the primary fundraising arm of Iona University Athletics—significantly increasing both donor participation and overall contributions during his tenure as chair. He also led the department’s premier annual fundraiser, the Goal Club Hall of Fame Golf Outing, since its inception, and served in multiple leadership roles across the Alumni Association and Board of Trustees.
