As a member institution of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) it is essential for anyone associated with intercollegiate athletics be aware of the rules and regulations that impact Iona University recruits, student-athletes, coaches, staff and boosters.

Ethical Conduct
- Honesty & Sportsmanship: Individuals employed by (or associated with) a member institution must act with honesty and sportsmanship at all times so that you represent the honor and dignity of fair play and the recognized high standards associated with wholesome competitive sports. [Bylaw 10.01.1]
- Gambling Activities: Staff members of the conference or institution athletic department as well as student athletes shall not knowingly:
- Provide information to individuals involved in organized gambling activities concerning intercollegiate athletics competition
- Solicit a bet on any intercollegiate team
- Accept a bet on any team representing the institution
- Solicit or accept a bet on intercollegiate competition for any item (cash, clothes, dinner) that has tangible value
- Participate in gambling activity that involves intercollegiate or professional athletics through a bookmaker, a parlay card, or any other method used in organized gambling.

Amateurism & Agents
Definitions & Applications:
- Individual: Any person of any age without reference to enrollment in an educational institution or status as a student-athlete
- Student-Athlete: A student whose enrollment was solicited by a member of the athletics staff or other representative of athletics interests with a view toward the student’s ultimate participation in the intercollegiate athletics program. Any other student becomes a student-athlete only when the student reports for an intercollegiate squad that is under the jurisdiction of the athletics department.
- "Individual" vs "Student-Athlete": NCAA amateur status may be lost as a result of activities prior to enrollment in college. If NCAA rules specify that an "individual" may or may not participate in certain activities, this term refers to a person prior to and subsequent to enrollment in a member institution. If NCAA rules specify "student-athlete" the legislation applies only to that person’s activities subsequent to enrollment.
- Professional Athlete: A professional athlete is one who receives any kind of payment, directly or indirectly, for athletics participation except as permitted by the governing legislation of the Association.
- Professional Athletics Team: A professional team is any organized team that provides any of its players more than actual and necessary expenses for participation on the team. Actual and necessary expenses are limited to the following:
- Meals directly tied to competition and practice held in preparation for such competition
- Lodging directly tied to competition and practice held in preparation for such competition
- Apparel, equipment and supplies
- Coaching and instruction
- Health/medical insurance
- Transportation
- Medical treatment and physical therapy
- Facility usage
- Entry
- Other reasonable expenses incidental to participation
- General Regulations on Amateur Status: An individual loses amateur status making him/her ineligible for intercollegiate competition in that sport if the individual:
- Uses his/her athletics skill (directly or indirectly) for pay in any form in that sport
- Accepts a promise of pay even if such pay is to be received after completion of intercollegiate athletics
- Signs a contract or commitment of any kind to play professional athletics (regardless of enforceability)
- Receives, directly or indirectly, a salary, reimbursement of expenses or any other form of financial assistance from a professional sports organization based upon athletic skill or participation, except as permitted by NCAA rules & regulations
- Competes on any professional athletics team even if no pay or remuneration for expenses was received
- Enters into an agreement with an agent
- Enter into a professional draft subsequent to initial full time collegiate enrollment (for student-athletes entering college on or after 8/1/03)[Bylaw 12.1.1]
- Use of Agents: An individual shall be ineligible for intercollegiate sport if her/she has agreed (orally or in writing) to be represented by an agent for the purpose of marketing his/her athletic ability or reputation in that sport. Further a student-athlete will become ineligible if he/she promise future negotiations by an agent and or if they accept a benefit from a prospective agent. [Bylaw 12.3.1]
Recruiting
- Recruiting is any solicitation of a prospect or a prospects relatives [or legal guardian(s)] by an institutional staff member or by a representative of the institution’s athletics interests for the purpose of securing the prospect’s enrollment and ultimate participation in the institutions intercollegiate athletics program. [Bylaw 13.02.1]
- Prospective Student-Athlete is a student who has started classes for the ninth grade year and remains a prospect until:
- The individual officially registers and enrolls in a full time program of studies and attends classes in any at a four-year institution
- The individual participates in a regular squad practice or competition at a four-year institution that occurs before the beginning of any term

- Representatives of Athletics Interests (Booster) is an individual, independent agency, corporate entity, or other organization who is known by a ember institution’s executive or athletics administration to:
- have participated in or to be a member of an agency or organization promoting the institution’s intercollegiate athletics program
- Have made a financial contributions to the athletics department or athletics booster organization of that institution
- Be assisting or to have been requested to assist in the recruitment of prospects
- Be assisting or to have assisted in providing benefits to enrolled student-athletes or their families
- Have been involved otherwise in promoting the institutions athletics program

- Permissible Recruiter
- Only Iona University Coaches who have passed the NCAA Recruiting Rules Test may recruit prospective student athletes for that sport.
- NO recruiting contacts can be made by a representative of athletic interest (includes letters, phone calls, face to face contact, e-mail, etc)
- You may forward all information on a prospect to appropriate coaches
- You may continue to maintain friendships developed previously in regard to prospective student athletes (no providing extra benefits to them)
