Iona University Athletics

Hynes Athletics Center

The Hynes Athletics Center main gym is the home of Iona University’s volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, and acrobatics & tumbling programs. The Hynes Center underwent major renovations in 2019, transforming the Maroon & Gold’s home court into a modern, state-of-the-art facility.

The complex contains one main competition court and two practice courts. Volleyball and acrobatics & tumbling events take place on the main floor. Seating consists of retractable bleachers surrounding the court on all four sides, creating an intimate atmosphere with a capacity of 2,578.

The reimagining of the Hynes Athletics Center was made possible through a generous lead gift from Edward F. Arrigoni ’56, ’91H.

The renovations dramatically enhanced the experience for both student-athletes and fans, with seating on all four sides of the court, state-of-the-art LED scoreboards and ribbon boards, improved lighting and sound, a new playing surface, and expanded capabilities for Iona’s ESPN productions. The Arrigoni Hall of Excellence, located in the front entranceway, showcases Iona’s accomplished student-athletes and honors the University’s rich athletics legacy.

First built in 1974, the Hynes Athletics Center has seen immense success in recent years.

Under former men’s basketball head coach Tim Cluess, the program appeared in the NCAA Tournament six times in nine seasons, winning five MAAC Tournament championships and three regular season titles. Rick Pitino’s Gaels added to the legacy with two regular season and two conference tournament titles from 2021–2023.

Former women’s head coach Billi Chambers led the Gaels to MAAC Regular Season Championships in 2013–14 and 2022–23, and NCAA Tournament appearances following conference tournament titles in 2016 and 2023.

The Iona volleyball program captured the MAAC regular season and tournament championship in 2018.

Iona’s acrobatics & tumbling program has quickly made its mark nationally, earning the No. 6 seed at the NCATA National Championships in both 2025 and 2026 after just its first three seasons of competition.

ENTRANCE

The Arrigoni Hall of Excellence, located in the front entranceway, highlights Iona’s storied athletics history. The space features championship trophies, memorabilia and recognition of all members of the University’s Arrigoni Hall of Fame.

SEATING

The current configuration features four banks of seating surrounding the main court, marking the first time in building history that seating is available on all four sides. The court was rotated to accommodate this layout, which also allows for a defined student section, band platforms and improved accessibility. The updated seating design established the current capacity of 2,578.

PLAYING SURFACE
The facility maintains three full basketball courts for practice use, with the main competition court oriented to align with the updated seating configuration. The court features Iona’s primary shield logo at center, with team benches positioned along the south side near the locker room access.

SCOREBOARDS

The Hynes Center features a comprehensive LED display system, including four corner video boards and ribbon boards along the north and south walls. These integrated displays provide enhanced in-game presentation and are operated from a centralized control area in conjunction with the scorer’s table.

SOUND

A modern sound system supports both athletics competition and large-scale campus events, delivering improved clarity and coverage throughout the facility.

LIGHTING

Upgraded lighting enhances the experience for student-athletes, fans and broadcasts alike, providing optimal conditions for competition, events and ESPN productions.
