Fairfield, CT - A 3-0 loss to Fairfield University snapped the Iona volleyball team's two match winning streak. The Gaels suffered 30-22, 30-17 and 36-34 game losses this afternoon, moving their overall record to 5-13 (3-6 MAAC).
The Stags took game one with a 21-13 kill advantage. Attack efforts by Iona kept the score close as the game was tied at 11 before Fairfield pulled ahead to lead for the remainder.
Service by Kristin Allain opened game two as the Gaels quickly led 2-0. Five kills by Megan Dailey along with a number of errors by the Stags left the game even at 9. Fairfield then staged a breakaway, outscoring Iona 21-8 from that point to win the game.
The Maroon & Gold were in control for much of the game three. A string of four unanswered points late along with kill efforts by Allain and Morgan Young forced the game to go long as both teams battled for the victory. The two sides traded serves until the Stags finally pulled out the two point edge.
Dailey and Young led the Gaels with 16 and 13 kills respectively. Shelby Erb scooped 14 digs, while Alyssa Morales once again had the team-high with 40 assists.
Iona will return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 18 as they travel to Marist.
