Poughkeepsie, NY - It was a tough loss tonight for the Iona College volleyball team as they dropped a 3-2 contest to Marist (25-30, 30-22, 30-23, 20-30, 13-15). The squad holds a 5-14 record (3-7 MAAC).
The Gaels jumped out to an early lead in game one thanks to kills by Megan Dailey, Katie Brilla, Whitney Wright and Morgan Young. Service aces from Kristin Allain and Alyssa Morales also helped the team surge ahead. Midway through the game, a series of errors by Iona and strong opposing offense brought Marist back up to snuff for the win.
The Maroon & Gold came back in games two and three, benefitting from advantages in kills and hitting percentage. Iona led 18-15 and 22-15 in kills for those games, while trouncing Marist .432-.211 and .452-.182 in hit percentage.
The Red Foxes stole game four to even the match at 2-2. Game five saw a strong offensive front from the Gaels, as they once again used the kill to gain a 10-5 lead. Marist retaliated with four straight points then pulled ahead by putting together two service aces, a kill, and forcing errors from Iona.
Allain had the team-high in kills over the five-game set with 23. Dailey and Young followed with 16 each. Morales set up 53 assists, while Shelby Erb led with 24 digs defensively.
The Gaels will be back on the court at home for a Homecoming weekend match against Manhattan on Sunday. The first serve is set for 3:00 pm.
