New Rochelle, NY - The Iona College women's volleyball team swept Niagara in three games on Saturday, winning 30-23, 30-26, and 30-23. The Gaels (6-16, 4-9) are back in action tomorrow when they host Canisius at 3:00 pm.
In game one, five straight service points from Kendall Paulus helped Iona jump out to a 12-5 advantage. Niagara stayed competitive, closing to within 27-23, but two Morgan Young kills sandwiched an attack error to give the first game to the Gaels.
Iona started fast again in game two, going ahead 10-3 on back-to-back Beth Holly aces. Trailing 29-20, Niagara ripped off six points in a row to make it things interesting, but Young again came up with the final kill for the Maroon & Gold.
The Purple Eagles started off game three with six straight points before the Gaels regained control. Megan Dailey's kill evened things up at 11, and the next four serves from Alyssa Morales all resulted in Iona points. The Gaels gradually pulled away, and Paulus and Young teamed up for a final block to seal the match for Iona.
Paulus had a team-high seven kills to lead a balanced Gael effort. Young was next with six, and Whitney Wright and Katie Brilla had five each. Morales recorded 26 assists for Iona, and four players had seven digs each to pace the team.
