New Rochelle, NY - Canisius came away with a three game victory over Iona on Sunday, winning 30-23, 30-22, and 30-17. The Gaels (6-17, 4-10) are back in action at home on Nov. 4 against Loyola.
Iona got off to a strong start in game one, taking a 10-8 lead on a Morgan Young ace. The Golden Griffins fought back before assuming the lead for good at 17-16. Three consecutive points to close the game resulted in the 30-23 win for Canisius.
Trailing 14-11 in game two, the Gaels surged ahead by one after a Katie Brilla kill and three points off Beth Holly serves. But Canisius recovered to win nine of the next ten points, and cruised from there to the eight-point win.
In game three, nine straight Brittany Gerde serves netted scores for Canisius, turning a 14-12 lead into an 11-point advantage as the visitors claimed the match sweep.
Kristin Allain paced Iona with eight kills, followed by seven each from Brilla and Megan Dailey. Alyssa Morales picked up 25 assists from the setter spot, while Young and Kayleigh Tobias tied for the team lead in digs with eight apiece.
