Lake Buena Vista, FL - Favorites for the MAAC title, No. 1 seeded Fairfield shut down Iona in three games (30-21, 37-35, 30-18) at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex. The Gaels were playing their second match of the day, after beating Rider in three games this afternoon.
2006 MAAC Volleyball Offensive Player of the Year Lindsey Lee led the Stags with her powerful jumping ability and leadership on the court. The Maroon & Gold put the first point on the board in game one off an attack error by Natalie Barba. Both teams went point for point to tie the game at four. From there, Fairfield went on a run, scoring four unanswered tallies. A kill by Shelby Erb momentarily broke the momentum, but the Stags would quickly go on another 5-0 run. The Gaels were plagued by errors, commiting 12 in the game.
A highly competitive game two saw 24 tied scores. A Morgan Young kill started things off for Iona. Multiple kills by Megan Dailey, Young, Katie Brilla and Kristin Allain led the squad to a 28-27 lead. The score creeped higher until an Iona error and a Fairfield ace locked away the game two victory for the Stags.
After long middle contest, the Gaels ran out of steam, recording just seven kills on 30 attempts in game three. Dailey was the high-hitter for Iona with 12 kills, followed by eight by Young. Alyssa Morales put up 31 sets while also logging 17 digs and a .400 attack percentage to lead the team in all three categories.
Iona will finish off their 2006 campaign on Friday, playing in a consolation match against Niagara.
