Megan Dailey had a double-double with 16 kills and 12 digs in the loss.
The turning point in the match came with the Gaels (1-3) leading 29-23 in the first game. The Knights (1-0) scored five straight points to cut the deficit to one before an attack error handed Iona the first game win, 30-28. Iona led in game two until another five points in a row for FDU late in the frame led to the Gaels' undoing. Four straight service points from Ali Philbrick put her squad ahead 26-24. Iona would score just one more point in the 30-25 loss. The Knights never trailed in the final two games, winning 30-24 and 30-21.
Freshman MB Sarah Weiner added 14 kills, her top output in her short four-match career in Maroon and Gold. Senior S Beth Holly also had a double-double with 41 assists and a team-best 15 digs. She added four blocks in the loss. Senior libero Shelby Erb had 14 digs and sophomore MH Kendall Paulus added a career-best seven blocks defensively for the Gaels.
Elena Schmidt's 20 kills led three Knights in double-digit kill totals. She also added 18 digs. Libero Lauren Lombardo had a match-high 30 digs. Lauren Boothby had eight blocks and 10 kills for the visitors.
The Gaels return to in-season tournament play when they travel to Columbus, OH and the Buckeye Invitational. Iona takes on No. 23 Ohio State along with Northern Illinois and a rematch with Lehigh, the Maroon & Gold's lone victory thus far.
