VOLLEYBALL DROPS FIRST CONFERENCE MATCH OF 2006

Jersey City, NJ - The Iona College volleyball team dropped a match to St. Peter's tonight, falling behind 30-23, 30-24, and 32-30. It was the first MAAC conference matchup of the season for the squad.

The outlook did not look good from the start, as the Gaels quickly found themselves at the wrong end of a 7-0 score early in game one. They were able to gather some good offensive moves to bring the score to within two as the game went on, but could not hit the 30 mark before St. Peter's. Iona put up it's highest attack percentage in game two, .136, but lost the close game. Knowing they would need a solid effort in the third game to stay alive, the Gaels stepped up the power and were in the lead for most of the game. With the game three score tied at 30, St. Peter's scored on two unanswered kills to take the win.

Megan Dailey led the Maroon & Gold in kills (13) and attack percentage (.237). Shelby Erb led on defense with 13 digs, and Beth Holly was tops for the team with 27 assists. The Gaels held the advantage in total attacks for all three games, leading 40-35, 44-42, and 47-37.

The team will return to the court on Sep. 17 in a conference match at Loyola.
