New Britain, CT - The Iona College volleyball team was held winless in three games tonight as Central Connecticut took a 3-0 victory over the Gaels. Iona (3-9) suffered 21-30, 19-30, 25-30 game losses in the sweep by the Blue Devils (9-5).
A combination of attack and ball handling errors to start game one put the Gaels down early. The team was able to pull together to even the score at nine, but couldn't gather enough momentum. Connecticut held a 16-13 attack advantage in game one.
The beginning of game two saw some good play from both sides, as the score remained close early on. The Gaels were haunted by errors, commiting eight throughout the game, which left the door open for the Blue Devils to take a two game lead.
A late surge in game three brought Iona to within as little as two points. Shelby Erb held the serve for four straight Gael points, however in the end the Maroon & Gold were unable to pull out the victory.
Kristin Allain led the team with nine kills, followed by Megan Dailey with eight. Alyssa Morales was tops in assists, putting up 22. Iona was ahead of Central Connecticut in total attacks in games one and two, leading 42-41 and 43-37 respectively.
The Gaels return home to face conference opponent Rider on Friday at 7:00 pm.
