Cambridge, MA - The Iona College men's water polo team was in action this
weekend in Massachusetts. The Gaels (8-12) had three critical league games versus
Brown University, Harvard University, and MIT. In each game, the Gaels kept it close but they came away with three tough defeats to three strong opponents. The Gaels fell 16-7, 12-9, and 14-9 to the Bears (12-7), the Crimson (6-8) and the Engineers (10-9) respectfully.
Against Brown the Gaels kept up
with the 20th ranked Bears, however could not keep it together in
the second half and were overcome 16-7. Junior Patrick St. Cin had a pair of goals, an assist, a steal and drew two kickouts. Classmate Ed Gronkowski added a pair of goals and drew two kickouts in the loss.
In the second game against Harvard, the
Maroon and Gold kept it to a one goal deficit going into the fourth quarter. In the
fourth however, fatigue and a lack of depth on the bench kicked in and the
Gaels dropped the match 12-9. Senior Brendan Barrow lead the Gaels with four goals on five shots and added a steal and a kickout drawn. St. Cin added three goals on four shots, two assists, a block and drew a kickout. Sophomore Joe Przekota and junior Nick Velasquez had the other Iona goals.
In the final competition of the weekend, the
Gaels looked to take down MIT in their home pool. With the score at 6-5 entering the third quarter, the Maroon a Gold looked to close in on their first win
of the weekend. However, with the exclusion of key players due to ejections,
the Gaels fell to MIT by the score of 14-9 to finish 0-3 on the weekend.
The Gaels will look to rebound as they take on Fordham at the Hynes Athletic Center Pool on Tuesday, October 16 at 7:30 pm.
