New Rochelle, NY - Junior Patrick St. Cin tallied 5 goals and his classmate Nick Velasquez
added 4 of his own as the Iona College men's water polo downed Fordham 15-12 at
the Hynes Athletic Center Pool. The Gaels (10-13) and the Rams (9-11)
went back and forth early in the game before the Gaels went on a 4-0
run from the end of the first quarter. Velasquez lead the Gaels with
back-to-back goals in the span of 24 seconds to give Iona a 6-2 lead in the second quarter. The Rams' Jakob Muller put up three of his team leading 7 goals in the second quarter and pulled Fordham within two goals as Iona lead it 8-6 at halftime.
After notching his three of his four goals in the first half, St. Cin added his next two in the third quarter. Each of his goals in the second half came after the Rams had nudged within a goal. Fordham's Paul Shrewsbury started the scoring in the third quarter, but St. Cin answered just a minute later to push the lead back to 2 goals. The Rams again were within a goal when St. Cin riffled one past Fordham goalie Timmy Will with 38 seconds left to make it 11-9.
The Gaels didn't let the Rams get any closer in the fourth quarter as Velasquez scored twice as Iona took a 15-12 victory. St. Cin finished with two steals, a kickout and block to go along with is 5 tallies. Velasquez added a steal, two blocks and a kickout to his 4 goals. Junior Ed Gronkowski had two goals, an assist, two steals, two blocks and drew two kickouts. Sophomore Emre Erdogan handed out 4 assists and had two steals in addition to his goal and senior Brendan Barrow also added a goal and 4 assists.
Senior Mark Rich and freshman Andrew Velasquez each added a goal for the Gaels. The Gaels are back in action as they head to New London to take on Conn College on Saturday, October 20.
