New London, CT - The Iona College men's water polo team got stellar efforts from junior
Patrick St. Cin, who tallied five goals, and sophomore Joe Przekota,
who added four of his own in the 24-12 defeat of Conn College. The
Gaels (10-12) had six players with multiple goals and eleven players with goals in the victory. The Gaels and the Camels (0-17) were separated by one goal after
the first quarter, but the Maroon and Gold put up eight goals in the
second quarter including seven unanswered to take a 14-7 lead into halftime.
In the second half, the Gaels continued to pour on the scoring as St. Cin and Przekota each picked up their final goals in the third quarter. Przekota extended the Gaels lead to eight as he put one past Conn College goalie, Brendan Kempf, just 74 seconds into the thrid quarter. St. Cin's final goal came 1:14 later and the Gaels didn't look back from there.
St. Cin finished with five goals, two assists and three steals while Przekota had an assist and drew two kickouts in addition to his four tallies. Junior Nick Velasquez had three goals on four shots and added two assists, two steals, a block and a pair of kickouts drawn. Senior Brendan Barrow picked up three goals, two steals and assist while junior Ed Gronkowski had two goals on three shots, an assist, three steals and a kickout drawn. Freshman Andrew Velasquez had two goals on two shots and senior Mark Rich, juniors Adam Neid and John Krzyminiski, sophomore Emre Erdogan and freshman Tyler Conroy accounted for the rest of the Gaels' goals.
Freshman netminders Grant Keissling and Eric Konzem each played a half. Keissling made nine saves and allowed seven goals on the 14 shots he faced. Konzem faced nine shots, allowed five goals and stopped four shots. He also added three steals.
The Gaels are back in action as they head to Cambridge, Massachusetts for the Northern Division Championships beginning November 3. The Gaels are the 5 seed and will face the 4 seed MIT at 11:30 AM.
