New Rochelle, NY - Alyssa Morales picked up a match-high 51 assists as the Iona College volleyball team (12-15, 9-5) shut out Marist (11-20, 4-0) in three games.
The Gaels were on point, putting up a .411 hitting percentage on the day. Sarah Wiener led the attack with 14 kills while Kristin Allain followed with 12 in additon to ten digs for a double-double. Allison Nieters rounded up 27 digs.
Iona opened game one with a commanding 11-4 lead. The Red Foxes slowly chipped away, pulling to within three at 24-21. Wiener, Paulus, and Colleen Genett combined for four kills over the final run for a 30-24 win. Both teams matched virtually point for point to kick off game two. With the score tied at 14, the Maroon & Gold began to pull away on a kill by Allain followed by a Laura Fojanesi ace. The squad surged ahead from there and claimed the second game, 30-20.
Game three carried on in similar fashion, with the score being tied as late as 19-19. The Gaels took advantage of a number of Marist hitting errors late in the game to win 30-22 and close out the match.
Iona returns to action with a midweek matchup, hosting Fairfield on Oct. 31 at 7:00 pm.
