New Rochelle, NY - The Iona College Volleyball team has snapped a three-match losing streak after defeating Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference opponent Rider in five games. Sophomore Sarah Wiener recorded her second career double-double, powering her way to a huge 23 kills and 14 digs. She was joined in the feat by junior Kendall Paulus, who added 12 kills and 17 digs.
The Gaels out-hit the Broncs in each of the match's five games, hitting well over .300 in games one (.333) and five (.375). Iona improved to 5-2 in the MAAC (7-12 overall) while Rider dropped to 0-8 (1-16 overall).
The squads split the first four stanzas, with Rider winning 30-24 in game one and 30-26 in game three, and Iona winning 30-26 in game two then dominating game four 30-16. Moving into the deciding game five, the Maroon & Gold surged to a 4-1 lead on consecutive kills by Wiener, Paulus, and Katie Brilla. After falling behind 7-4, the Broncs pulled to within two on a Lacey Johnson kill. Iona then increased its lead to 10-5 en route to a 15-11 deciding game victory.
Allison Nieters led the Gaels with 34 digs while Kristin Allain joined the double digit ranks with 12 kills. Johnson had a team high 19 kills for Rider.
The squad returns to action tomorrow (Sunday) to face local rival Manhattan at 3:00 pm in the Hynes Athletics Center.
