New Rochelle, NY - In back-to-back days the Iona College Volleyball team has come away with a 3-2 win at the Hynes Athletics Center after defeating Manhattan in five games this afternoon. Kendall Paulus was on point again for the Gaels, earning yet another double-double on 12 kills and 17 digs.
Iona found itself in an 0-2 hole when Manhattan won the first two games 30-27 and 30-26. The Gaels surged in game three, taking a large 12-4 lead to start off the period. The Jaspers' Sherytta Stokes and Rita Welsh combined for four straight kills to climb to within four at 18-14, but wouldn't get any closer. Sarah Wiener stopped Manhattan's run with three kills of her own as Iona went on to a 30-22 game three victory.
Tied at 18-all in the fourth game, the Gaels capitalized on four Manhattan hitting errors and a kill by Kimberlee Boogard to take a 22-18 lead. The Jaspers clung tightly to diminish Iona's margin to 25-24, but the Maroon & Gold scored five of the final eight points for a 30-27 win to force a fifth game. Iona controlled the final stanza, leading by as much as six points en route to 15-11 win to claim the match.
Wiener's 15 led four gaels with double digit kill totals, including 14 by Katie Brilla, 12 by Paulus, and 11 by Colleen Genett. Allison Nieters paced the defense with 43 digs, and Alyssa Morales earned 45 assists.
Iona will close out a four-match home series, hosting Quinnipiac in non-conference action on Oct. 10 at 7:00 pm.
