GAELS WIN 3 STRAIGHT AT CLAREMONT CONVERGENCE TO FINISH .500 ON TRIP

Claremont, CA - The Iona College men's water polo team completed a successful weekend winning three straight and going 3-1 at the Claremont Convergence. The Gaels (9-10) came into the weekend 0-2 after falling to Concordia (CA) and #19 Cal Baptist on Thursday. The Gaels just fell short against Occidental 7-6 in their opening game before ripping off three straight wins over La Verne, California Lutheran and Cal Maritime.

In their first game of the Claremont Convergence, the Gaels faced off against Occidental. The Gaels got a great performance from sophomore Joe Przekota, who netted a pair of goals and drew two kickouts. Freshman goalie Grant Keissling faced 21 shots and made 10 saves, but allowed 7 goals as the Gaels fell to Tigers 7-6.

The Maroon and Gold bounced back quickly in their second game of the day against La Verne. The Gaels got multiple goal games from three players and four players drew multiple kickouts. Nick and Andrew Velasquez each added a goal while Erdogan drew 2 kickouts and senior Brendan Barrow had an assist and three steals to go along with his 2 kickouts. Keissling had another double-digit save performance as he helped the Gaels pick up their first win of the tournament with an 11-9 victory.

Przekota and St. Cin again led the Gaels as they combined for 4 of the team's 5 goals in a 5-4 victory over California Lutheran. Nick Velasquez added another goal, his fourth of the trip to that point, and drew three kickouts to lead the Maroon and Gold. Freshman Eric Konzem got the start in goal and faced 23 shots and made 12 saves. He also added 5 steals and an assist as he picked up the victory.

Looking to finish the weekend at 3-3, the Gaels put up 16 goals and drew 10 kickouts as they downed Cal Maritime 16-11. Przekota finished his weekend with 5 more goals, 2 kickouts, a steal and an assist. St. Cin had his third multiple goal game of the tournament with a hat trick on four shots.
