Claremont, CA - The Iona College men's water polo team completed a successful weekend
winning three straight and going 3-1 at the Claremont Convergence. The Gaels (9-10) came into
the weekend 0-2 after falling to Concordia (CA) and #19 Cal Baptist on Thursday. The Gaels just fell short
against Occidental 7-6 in their opening game before ripping off three straight
wins over La Verne, California Lutheran and Cal Maritime.
In their first game of the Claremont Convergence, the Gaels
faced off against Occidental. The Gaels
got a great performance from sophomore Joe Przekota, who netted a pair of goals
and drew two kickouts. Juniors Patrick
St. Cin, Nick Velasquez and John Krzyminski each added a goal with sophomore
Emre Erdogan picking up his fifth goal of the season. The Gaels, though, battled foul trouble all game as Przekota, Velasquez,
and Erdogan each had multiple kickouts with Velasquez accounting for 3 of
Iona's 12 kickouts. Freshman goalie
Grant Keissling faced 21 shots and made 10 saves, but allowed 7 goals as the
Gaels fell to Tigers 7-6.
The Maroon and Gold bounced back quickly in their second
game of the day against La Verne. The
Gaels got multiple goal games from three players and four players drew multiple
kickouts. Przekota picked where he left
off in the first game as he added 4 goals on 6 shots and drew a pair of
kickouts. St. Cin notched 3 goals on 8
shots and classmate Ed Gronkowski had a pair of goals on four shots, drew 2
kickouts and added 2 steals. Nick and
Andrew Velasquez each added a goal while Erdogan drew 2 kickouts and senior
Brendan Barrow had an assist and three steals to go along with his 2
kickouts. Keissling had another
double-digit save performance as he helped the Gaels pick up their first win of
the tournament with an 11-9 victory.
Przekota and St. Cin again led the Gaels as they combined
for 4 of the team's 5 goals in a 5-4 victory over California Lutheran. Nick Velasquez added another goal, his
fourth of the trip to that point, and drew three kickouts to lead the Maroon
and Gold. Freshman Eric Konzem got the
start in goal and faced 23 shots and made 12 saves. He also added 5 steals and an assist as he picked up the
victory.
Looking to finish the weekend at 3-3, the Gaels put up 16
goals and drew 10 kickouts as they downed Cal Maritime 16-11. Przekota finished his weekend with 5 more
goals, 2 kickouts, a steal and an assist.
St. Cin had his third multiple goal game of the tournament with a hat
trick on four shots. Gronkowski, Velasquez,
Krzyminski, and Erdogan each picked up a goal while seniors Brendan Barrow and
Mark Rich notched their first goals of the weekend in the victory.
The Gaels are back in action as they face #20 Brown,
Harvard and MIT in Cambridge, MA beginning Friday, October 13.
