New Rochelle, NY - The Iona College volleyball team (13-17, 10-7 MAAC) took on second ranked Siena (21-7, 16-1 MAAC) in it's final home match of the 2007 season. The Gaels struggled and failed to hit above 9.5% in any of the three games, as Siena won the contest 30-17, 30-26, and 30-19.
Iona's best chance to avoid the shutout came in game two. The Saints took advantage of early Iona hitting errors to open with an 8-2 edge. The Gaels battled steadily, chipping their way back to within three points at 24-21. Facing game-point, they held off Siena with two kills by Kristin Allain combined with two errors on the visitors. The Saints finally put it away on a Burgandy McCurty kill.
Allain was the lone Iona player to reach double figures with ten kills. Kimberlee Boogaard led the blocking effort, teaming up on four blocks. Allison Nieters rounded up 15 digs, while Alyssa Morales logged 26 assists.
The Gaels travel to Loyola for the final match of the regular season. The teams will play tomorrow evening (Nov. 11) at 6:00 pm.
