Teaneck, NJ - After a hard-fought four games, the Iona College volleyball team lost the deciding game five in a 3-2 defeat by Fairleigh Dickinson University. Junior Kendall Paulus was strong for the Gaels, recording a double-double with 16 kills and 12 digs.
The Knights won the first game 30-27, then Iona battled back to even the match at one game apiece with a 31-29 victory in game two. The Gaels held a 29-27 lead following a service ace by Laura Fojanesi and a Kristin Allain Kill. Fairleigh Dickinson scored the next two points to tie the game. Paulus then recorded two points for Iona on a kill and an ace for the win. Game three went to the Knights by a score of 30-26 before Iona sent the match to a fifth game by winning game four 30-28. Play was even to start off the final stanza, but the Knights sealed the victory by outscoring the Gaels 10-6 down the stretch.
Sarah Wiener managed a match-high 23 kills while hitting .238, followed by Allain with 11 kills. Allison Nieters led the squad with 27 digs, being joined in double digits by Paulus (12), Fojanesi (10), and Bethany Schornack (10). Setter Alyssa Morales recorded 55 assists for Iona.
The Maroon & Gold return to MAAC action with the first of a three-game homestand on Sep 22. They are set to face Niagara at 2:00 pm.
