New Rochelle, NY - Kendall Paulus and Sarah Wiener each had 13 kills in Iona's 3-1 win over Canisius this afternoon at the Hynes Athletics Center. The victory was the Gaels fourth straight in conference play this season, improving the team's Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference record to 4-0 (6-9 overall). The Golden Griffins fell to 1-3 in the MAAC (3-12 overall).
Alyssa Morales recorded 43 assists for the Gaels, while Allison Nieters aided with 32 digs. Wiener and Kimberlee Boogaard each had six blocks on the day. Paulus' four service aces were a team high.
Paulus had a clutch performance as the Maroon & Gold's lead-off server as she racked up no less than two consecutive points in three of the four games, including three in game three and seven off the bat in game two. A strong Gael squad won the first two games by identical scores of 30-25.
After jumping out to a 10-3 lead in game three, Iona began losing ground as Canisius scored six of the next ten points to pull even at 14-all. The score would be tied four more times in the period, with the hosts fighting for the win and the visitors fighting to stay afloat in the match. The Griffs scored seven of nine down the stretch for the third game victory.
Determined not to resort to a fifth game, the Gaels pressed in game four to vault to a 13-6 edge. Canisius would not disappear, however, coming back to tie at 13-13. Colleen Genett recorded a timely kill to end the Golden Griffins' seven point run, and the Gaels put it away from there.
On Wednesday (Sep. 26), the squad will play its final non-conference tilt of the season. Iona hosts Central Connecticut at 7:00 pm.
