New London, CT- The Iona College men's water polo team posted a successful 3-1 record at the Conn College Invite this weekend. The Gaels (5-7) defeated Penn State Behrend and Queens College on Saturday afternoon before splitting with Brown and host Connecticut College on Sunday.
Iona snapped a six-game slide in the weekend opener, defeating Behrend 14-10. The Gaels took the four goal advantage into halftime and held on for the victory.
Sophomore
Joe Przekota led the scoring with five goals and assist while adding a kick out drawn. Junior
Ed Gronkowski also had six points with four goals and two assists. He added a team best four steals defensively. Junior tri-captain
Patrick St. Cin added two goals and an assist with two steals and a kickout drawn.
Rookie
Eric Konzem earned the win stopping three shots while adding a steal in the first half. Classmate Grant Keissling had six saves in the second half relief effort.
The Gaels continued success in game two, doubling up Queens, 16-8. After taking a commanding 5-0 lead after one quarter, the Maroon & Gold never looked back with a 9-2 halftime lead and 13-4 advantage after three quarters.
Przekota added five more tallies adding two assists and two kickouts drawn. Junior
Nick Velasquez had four goals with two steams, two ejections drawn and a field block. Junior
Adam Neid had two goals in the victory.
Keissling picked up the win with four first half saves. He added a steal and an assist in his appearance. Konzem came on for the second half stopping four shots with four steals.
Brown used five third quarter goals on seven Iona ejections in an 11-6 win over the Gaels. The Maroon & Gold trailed by a goal heading into halftime but was out scored 5-1 in the decisive third period.
Gronkowski was the leading scorer with a hat trick. Przekota, St. Cin and Velasquez each had a goal. Velasquez had a team best four ejections drawn and five steals. Konzem stopped eight shots and had seven steals in the loss.
Iona rebounded in the finale, exploding for 21 goals in the 21-10 win over Conn College. Iona out scored the host Camels 8-2 in the second quarter to take a 12-4 halftime lead.
St. Cin had a tournament high six goals and an assist with two steals and a block. Przekota added six points with three goals and three assists while adding three ejections drawn. Gronkowski, Neid, Velasquez and freshman
Andrew Velasquez each had two goals. The elder Velasquez added three assists and eight steals in the contest, believed to be a single-game school record.
Freshmen
Tyler Conroy and
Chris Richards each tallied their first collegiate goals. Keissling earned the win with four saves and a steal.
The Gaels are off for 10 days before returning to action for a rematch against Queens College in a CWPA Northern Division Contest. The game is slated for 7:30 at the Hynes Center Pool.
