Loudonville, NY - The Iona College volleyball team has moved to 4-1 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action (6-11 overall) after being beaten in three games by Siena (10-3, 5-0). Prior to the day's match, the Gaels were one of two undefeated MAAC teams while the Saints have now won nine straight.
Iona had two game-point opportunities in the opener, but Siena rallied for a 32-20 game one win. Game two was evenly contested as the Gaels were behind by a miniscule one point at 16-15. The Saints managed a 14-10 advantage through the latter portion of the period for 30-25 victory before halving Iona with a 30-15 triumph in game three.
The Maroon & Gold hung tough behind its talented freshman class. Colleen Genett had eight kills, libero Allison Nieters had a match-high 18 digs and Laura Fojanesi added six digs. Sophomore Sarah Wiener and junior Kendall Paulus each had 10 kills.
The squad will go for a fifth conference win when it faces off against Loyola in a home match on Sunday (Sep. 30) at 3:00 pm.
