Washington, DC - Much improved from their earlier showing against Northwestern, the Iona College volleyball team lost a 3-1 decision to the Georgetown Classic host Hoyas. The Gaels finished the weekend with a 1-2 tournament record.
The Maroon & Gold led throughout much of the first game, but Georgetown came on strong in the final stages to take a 30-26 win. Iona came back in game two, evening the match with a 30-22 victory. The Gaels hit .667 in the game, holding the Hoyas to a stingy .100. However, the hosts would not stay down for long as they scored 21 kills in a 30-21 game three win. Georgetown sealed the deal in game four, winning 30-22.
Allison Nieters continued to show her defensive prowess, racking up 22 digs in the match to go along with three kills and three service aces. Kristin Allain led both teams with 17 kills and eight blocks. Iona freshman Rachel Whitten also had a strong showing, adding 12 kills, four digs, and a block.
The Gaels will face their first MAAC foe of the season on Sep. 15. They play against St. Peter's on the road at 2:00 pm.
