USAFA, CO - The Iona College Men's Water Polo team made its second trip to the west
this season and landed in Colorado Springs to face No. 19 Air Force.
The Gaels (11-16) couldn't get into a rhythm on Saturday as the
Falcons(12-8) took a 15-8 win. After a 2-2 first quarter, Air Force
put up five goals in each of the final three quarters for a 17-5 win on Sunday.
Air Force put the first goal on the scoreboard a minute into the game, but the Gaels and Falcons traded goals over the next 64 seconds, with Ed Gronkowski tying the game at 2. The Falcons added two more to take a 4-2 lead after the first quarter and went on to outscore Iona 11-6 over the next three quarters to take a 15-8 win.
Nick Velasquez and Trevor Creighton each netted hat tricks with Patrick St. Cin adding the final Gaels' tally. Eric Konzem had two saves with Eric Lilly adding three saves as they split time in net.
On Sunday, both teams battled in the first quarter with Iona getting on the board
first with a score from Joe Przekota. Air Force netted the next two goals fora short-live lead as Velasquez tied the game with 24 ticks left in the quarter. The Falcons took over putting up five goals in the second, third and fourth quarters and holding the Gaels to just a goal in each quarter as Air Force took the finale 15-8.
Przekota finished with a pair of goals. Creighton and Gronkowski each netted a goal. Konzem played the entire game with seven saves.
The Gaels will take on three ranked opponents next weekend facing No. 18 Bucknell and No. 20 Princeton on Saturday, October 25. On Sunday, October 26, Iona faces No. 24 Mercyhurst.
