Bronx, NY - Co-captains Ed Gronkowski and Joe Przekota helped guide the Iona College Men's Water Polo to a tough split this weekend. The Gaels (12-17) were edged in overtime by No. 15 Princeton on Saturday, but used a strong first half to sink Mercyhurst on Sunday.
On Saturday, the Maroon & Gold battled all game with the ranked Tigers (13-8), but trailed 3-1 after the first quarter. Iona responded in the second with a 3-1 quarter of its own and the game was tied at the half. The teams each added three goals in the third quarter and the game remained tied 8 and Princeton scored with 50 seconds left. Przekota tied the game again and sent it into overtime putting one in the back of the net with two seconds left. The Tigers went on to outscore the Gaels 4-1 in the extra sessions and held on for a 13-10 victory.
Przekota finished with four goals, two steals, and a kickout drawn. Gronkowski added a pair of goals with an assist, and two steals. Trevor Creighton also netted a pair of goals with a kickout drawn. Captain Patrick St. Cin had a goal with Emre Erdogan putting up a goal, a kickout drawn, two steals and a field block. Goalie Eric Kozem had 10 saves and five steals.
The Gaels and Lakers (15-7) faced off at Fordham's pool in the Bronx. Iona outscored Mercyhurst 7-4 in the first half and put up a 3-1 third quarter. The Lakers took its only quarter 3-2 in the fourth, but the Maroon & Gold took the win 12-8 for the weekend split.
Gronkowski led the team with four goals. St. Cin, Przekota, Nick Velasquez, Andrew Velasquez, Creighton, Seth Tasman and Erdogan each added goals in the Gaels victory. Konzem had another strong performance with 12 saves.
Iona closes out the 2008 regular season against Fordham on Thursday, October 30 in the Bronx.
