Claremont, CA - The Iona College Men's Water Polo completed a strong Claremont
Convergence with two games on Saturday against No.15 Redlands and the
host Claremont. The Gaels (8-12) led nearly the entire game against the Bulldogs (11-2), but a goal with less than a minute sunk Iona 9-8. The Maroon
& Gold rebounded and used a dominant fourth quarter to down the
Stags 10-8.
"We were winning the whole game," said Head Coach Brian Kelly. "They literally scored with one second left on a tough break for us." After an even first quarter, the Gaels opened up a one goal lead at the half. Iona held a one goal advantage heading into the fourth quarter, but Redlands outscored the Gaels 3-1 to squeak out a 9-8 win.
Joe Przekota netted a hat trick with an assist and two kickouts drawn. Patrick St. Cin and Ed Gronkowski each added a pair of goals with Seth Tasman netting the Gaels' final tally. Eric Konzem had eight saves and five takeaways.
To close out the weekend, Iona faced the host Claremont and jumped out to a lead for the second straight game. After the Stags tied the game at six heading into the fourth quarter, the Maroon & Gold put up four goals en route to a 10-8 victory to finish the Claremont Convergence with a 2-2 record.
St. Cin led the team with four goals and added a kickout drawn. Przekota added another hat trick with three kickouts drawn and a field block. Nick Velasquez, Tasman and Emre Erdogan each added goal with Erdogan drawing a kickout. Konzem had a second straight game with eight saves.
"We're having a good trip, but I wish had a few more wins," said Kelly about his team's performance at the Claremont Convergence and the split on Thursday. The Gaels return to the pool on Tuesday, October 7 to face No. 10 UC Santa Barbara at 4:00 pm. Iona will have its first home game on Friday, October 10 against Connecticut College. Game time is set for 8:00 pm.
