RIVERDALE, NY- The Iona College volleyball team dropped a heartbreaking five set decision to Manhattan in MAAC action at Draddy Gym on Saturday. After taking a 2-1 lead with wins in set two and three (18-25, 25-18, 26-24), Iona dropped the fourth set 14-25 and the deciding set 23-25 - a set which normally runs as first to 15.
Three Gaels recorded 10 or more kills and five others posted 10 or more digs in the loss. Rookie Rachelle Wilson posted a career-high 19 kills and a .438 hitting percentage in the loss. Her 22.5 points was also a career-best and the third-highest single match point total for the Gaels this season. Sophomore Colleen Genett matched a career-best with 15 kills. It was the third time in her one-plus seasons with the Gaels she hit the mark. Junior Sarah Wiener had 10 kills and five assists.
Sophomore libero Allison Nieters recorded 26 digs while classmates Alyssa Erickson, and Laura Fojanesi and freshmen Nicole Tamburri each had 11 in the loss. Tamburri's 11 digs was a season-best for the rookie.
The Gaels look to reclaim fourth place in the MAAC on Sunday when they take on Marist in Poughkeepsie, NY.
