Annapolis, MD - The Iona College Men's Water Polo faced Bucknell in its second round
game at the Eastern Championships. A late goal by the Bison with 1:40
left on the game clock was the difference as the Gaels were edged as
Bucknell took it 11-10.
Just as it had against Navy on Friday, Iona built an early lead, this time by two goals as Joe Przekota netted back-to-back goals in the first 90 seconds. The Bison outscored the Gaels 4-1 to close out the quarter with a 4-3 advantage. The Gaels used goals from Przekota and Trevor Creighton to tie the game at 5-5 in the second quarter after Bucknell scored and the Bison took back the lead with a pair and it was 7-5 at the half.
The game remained scoreless for nearly five minutes before Przekota picked up his thrid on the afternoon, but Bucknell netted two more to push the lead to 9-6. Przekota kept finding the back of the net as he scored with 17 seconds left in the third to pull Iona with two once again. With less than a minute and a half remaining in the game, Patrick St. Cin whipped off a shot followed by an Ed Gronkowski goal and it was all tied at 9. The Gaels took its second lead on the afternoon as Tasman picked up his second goal, but back-to-back tallies gave Bucknell the game winner. A final shot for Iona was blocked off the noggin of the Bison goalie to preserve the 11-10 victory.
Przekota finished with five goals and four kickouts drawn and probably played his "best game of season," said Head Coach Brian Kelly. St. Cin added a pair of assists and a field block to his goal and Tasman's tallies were supplemented by an assist and a steal. Gronkowski three field blocks and two kickouts drawn and a goal and Trevor Creighton added the final tally for the Gaels. Goalie Eric Konzem had 15 saves, four steals, and blocked a 5 meter.
The Gaels will meet
the Massachusetts Institute of Technology at 2:30 p.m. in the
