"D" KEY IN WIN ON THE ROAD; GAELS WIN SECOND STRAIGHT OVER SAINT PETER'S, 60-58

Box Score Jersey City, NJ - Sophomore Milan Prodanovic netted 19 and Dexter Gray recorded his first double-double in Maroon & Gold with 12 points and 12 rebounds in the Iona College men's basketball team's 60-52 victory over Saint Peter's in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action at the Yanitelli Center. The Gaels (9-15, 5-7 MAAC) used a stifling defensive effort, holding the Peacocks (4-17, 1-10 MAAC) to just 33.3% shooting in the contest.

The two teams played even through the first eight and a half minutes of the contest. With the scored tied at 7-7, Prodanovic and the Peacocks' Nick Leon hit back-to-back three pointers to knot the score at 10 at the 11:33 mark. Freshman Rashon Dwight hit a running layup at the 10:14 to spark an 8-0 run over the next 1:42 with the exclamation point coming on senior Devon Clarke's dunk of a slick feed from sophomore De'Shaune Griffin. The home team answered with a 9-0 run of its own, with Leon giving Saint Peter's a 19-18 lead with 6:04 to go on his second three pointer of the half. With the score tied at 21, Clarke and Prodanovic hit four straight free throws and the Gaels never trailed again. Iona ended the final five minutes on a 13-4 run to take a 34-25 lead into the break.

In the second, the Gaels continued to build the lead as another Prodanovic three put the team ahead 43-29 just 2:53 into the second half. Iona nurtured its double digit lead until about eight minutes to play. Leading by 13 at the 9:38 mark, the Gaels began to struggle to find a bucket. The Peacocks went on a 13-3 run over the next 8:37 to cut the deficit to just three points with just over a minute to play. The Gaels held on with a 6-for-6 shooting performance from the free throw line in the final minute.

Prodanovic shot 5-of-10 for the game and 4-of-7 from the field to account for his 19 points. He was 5-of-6 from the free throw line. Gray's 12 board marked a career-high. He added three blocks, two assists and a steal in the solid all-around effort. Clarke and junior Gary Springer each had eight points in the win.

The Gaels dominated the battle of the boards, 44-34 including 18-16 on its offensive glass. The team out shot its opponent, 41.2%-33.3%.

Senior Todd Sowell scored all 14 of his points in the second half and grabbed 12 rebounds in the loss. Leon and classmate Wesley Jenkins had 10 points a piece.

The Gaels earned their first win on the road in a conference game since Feb. 15, 2006 when they held off Rider in a thrilling 83-79 victory. Since starting the season at 0-6, Iona has recorded a .500 record at 9-9.

The Maroon & Gold enjoys a rare week off during the MAAC regular season and returns to action next Friday (Feb. 8) against Canisius at the Hynes Athletics Center. The contest marks the lone February MAAC home game and is the feature match up in a double header with the women's program. Tipoff for the Gaels-Griffs contest is slated for 7:30 pm.
