Polo team to a split on the opening day of competition at the ECAC
Championship. The Gaels (5-8) fell in the opener to George Washington
9-7, but dropped the host Harvard 15-10.
In the opener against the Colonials (5-5), both teams posted three goals, but the Maroon & Gold were able to jump out to a 6-4 lead with a three goal second quarter. George Washington broke the game open outscoring Iona 4-1 in the third quarter and shutout the Gaels 1-0 in the fourth quarter to edge out a 9-7 win. Iona was 0-5 on its last five man advantages.
Przekota had a goal and four kickouts drawn with St. Cin adding a goal, an assist and a steal. Ed Gronkowski netted a pair with an assist and Seth Tasman netted a pair as well with an assist, two steals and a field block. Trevor Creighton added a goal and two steals and Nick Velasquez rounded out the scoresheet with an assist and a field block. Goalie Eric Konzem stopped seven of the 16 shots he faced and grabbed two steals.
The Gaels faced the host, Harvard in their next game and controlled the pace from the opening whistle. With a 4-2 advantage after the first quarter, the Maroon & Gold added a pair in the second to take a 6-4 halftime lead. The Crimson and Iona combined for nine goals in the third quarter with Iona netting six to build its lead and go on to a 15-10 win.
St. Cin led the way with six goals, three assists, a kickout drawn and two field blocks. Przekota followed with four goals and three kickouts drawn. Gronkowski netted a pair with a kickout drawn and field block with Seth Tasman adding a goal, an assist and a field block. Emre Erdogan scored twice with an assist, a kickout drawn and field block and Cameron Hudson rounded out the scoring with a goal. Konzem played strong with eight saves, a steal and three assists.
The Gaels will take on Princeton in the fifth place game at 10:30 am on Sunday.
