HAMDEN, CT- The Iona College volleyball team earned its fifth victory in a row and fourth straight three-set sweep in a win at Quinnipiac. The Gaels (9-4) handled the Bobcats 25-20, 25-20, 25-21 and continued to add to their best start since the 2002 season.
Junior
Sarah Wiener and sophomore
Rachel Whitten were the squad's top performers offensively recording 13 and 11 kills respectively. Sophomore
Colleen Genett posted a .364 hitting percentage with seven kills while rookie
Molly O'Shea hit .545 (6-0-11) in the victory.
Sophomore
Alyssa Morales recorded her first double-double of the season (12th career) with 34 assists and 10 digs. Sophomore
Allison Nieters averaged 5.7 digs per set with 17 total.
Set 1:Iona led wire-to-wire in the 25-20 first set win. A kill by O'Shea made the score 16-11 and the Gaels never looked back. Wiener posted five kills and O'Shea was 4-of-6 in the frame. Nieters recorded seven digs.
Set 2:The Gaels never trailed and took the lead for good on a Genett kill at 9-8. Iona's balanced attack saw Genett, Wiener and rookie
Rachelle Wilson each post four kills.
Set 3:The Bobcats took their first and only lead of the match on an Iona attack error that made the score 2-1. The Gaels quickly erased the lead and again took the lead for good after an 8-8 tie. This time it was
Wiener's kill that put the squad on top. Whitten exploded for seven kills on 13 attempts.
The Maroon & Gold look to make it six in a row on Saturday at Siena in a very important MAAC Weekend for the squad. The Gaels take on the MAAC preseason Saints the day before taking on No. 2 Fairfield on the road.
