New Rochelle, NY ? The Iona College women's swimming and diving team finished its regular season and conference schedules by splitting a dual meet with Fairfield and Loyola at Hynes Center Pool. The Gaels were able to turn aside the Stags 154-140, but suffered a setback against the Greyhounds by a score of 167 -127.
The Gaels began the meet with a second place showing by the “A” squad in the 200 yard Individual Medley (1:54.85), falling just .11 seconds behind the first place team.
Sophomore
Christine Larkin (11:04.67) got the Maroon & Gold off to a solid start in the individual events with a second place finish in the 1000 yard Freestyle swim. Junior
Megan McNeely (11:12.89) and sophomore
Christine Williams (11:33.54) finished fourth and seventh, respectively, in the event.
Freshmen
Mackenzie Mone (2:00.95) and
Caitlin McGregor (2:02.40) continued the opening surge by the Gaels by placing second and fourth, respectively, in the 200 yard freestyle.
Maggie Wood enjoyed a successful day for the Gaels. She began the meet by placing second the 100 yard backstroke with a time of 1:03.49, two other Iona performers,
Kathleen Link (1:05.65) and
Brittany Freeman (1:06.09) also finished in the top six. In the 200 yard backstroke, Wood (2:16.62), along with McNeely (2:18.99) and Freeman (2:19.60), placed in the top five. Wood capped off her meet by placing third in the 200 yard Individual Medley with a time of 2:20.45.
Freshman
Jamie Manser recorded the first victory of the meet for the Gaels with a first place finish in the 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 1:09.45. Sophomore
Sarah Walker (1:12.65) placed third in the event as well. Manser continued her impressive total for the day with a second place finish in the 200 yard breaststroke at a time of 2:38.64. Walker finished just behind Manser in the event with a time of 2:39.17.
Sophomore Sam Cody (2:13.19) continued Iona's winning ways by placing first in the 200 yard butterfly. Later in the meet, she would place second in the 100 yard butterfly with a time of 1:02.20, just ahead of
Amanda Cody (1:02.35). Cody finished her meet with a fourth place finish in the 200 yard IM with a time of 2:20.76.
Amanda Cody finished second in her first event of the afternoon, the 50 yard freestyle, with a time of 25.36. Link (26.28), Mone (26.30) and Manser (27.14) all placed in the top ten of the event.
Mone (56.12) continued her fantastic day with a third place finish in the 100 yard freestyle. She along with Link,
Amanda Cody, and senior
Dana Patterson, finished second in the meet's final event, the 200 yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:44.02.
Prior to the meet, the four senior members of the team were honored for their commitment and dedication to Iona College athletics. They included Patterson, Cody,
Stephanie Klocke and
Angela Kohlhoff.
The Gaels return to the pool for the MAAC Championships, taking place Feb. 12-14 in Baltimore, MD.
