NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College volleyball team dropped a heartbreaking five-set decision to Niagara in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action to Niagara. After falling behind 2-1, the Gaels knotted the match even and came within one point of tying the match at 14 before the Purple Eagles secured the match's final point.
Four Gaels recorded double-digit kill totals led by senior OH Sarah Wiener's Iona season best 22. Wiener hit .404 in the match with three errors in 47 attempts while also recording five digs and an ace. Sophomore MB Molly O'Shea posted 15 kills and hit a team-best .467, junior MB Colleen Genett had 13 kills and hit .440 and junior OH Rachel Whitten had 12 kills in the loss. Junior S Alyssa Erickson had 45 assists, eight digs and three blocks.
Defensively, junior libero Allison Nieters had 21 digs and freshman RS Theresa Harvey had 17. Whitten completed a double-double with 10 digs and O'Shea's five blocks led all performers.
Prior to the match, Wiener was honored for becoming the eighth player in school history to post 1,000 kills, a feat accomplished last Sunday vs. Loyola.
The Gaels are back in action at the Hynes Center tomorrow afternoon when they host Canisius at 3:00 pm.
