NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College volleyball team rebounded from a tough Saturday loss to Niagara with a three-set sweep of Canisius in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action at the Hynes Center. The Gaels took the match 25-23, 25-21, 25-16.
The Gaels outside attack of senior Sarah Wiener and junior Rachel Whitten led the way offensively. Wiener posted a match-best 16 points with 10 kills, four aces and four assisted blocks. Whitten added 12 points on 11 kills and a service ace. Iona also got great production out of their middle hitters as sophomore Molly O'Shea posted nine kills and six blocks while hitting a team-best .304. Junior MH Colleen Genett recorded nine kills and three rejections.
Iona's setter tandem of junior Alyssa Erickson and sophomore Nicole Tamburri served as very adept playmakers in the win. Erickson was three blocks shy of a triple-double recording 27 assists, 12 digs and seven blocks while appearing in the first two set wins. Tamburri came on in relief and posted 13 assists in the set three clincher.
Defensively, junior libero Allison Nieters led five players with 10 or more digs. Whitten also completed a double double with 10 digs. Rookie RS Theresa Harvey and junior DS Laura Fojanesi also posted 10 digs in the victory.
The Gaels hit the road for three matches before returning home for Rider in two weeks on Nov. 8. Iona takes on Saint Peter's next Saturday for a 2:00 pm match up on Halloween. The Maroon & Gold completes the weekend at Marist to begin the month of November.
