BRONX, NY - The Iona College men's water polo team lost a hard fought match to Fordham 15-14 in overtime Wednesday evening. With the defeat, the Gaels finish the season as the number three seed in the CWPA Northern Division playoffs. Senior Joe Przekota had eight points on five goals and three assists while junior Seth Tasman had five goals and two assists of his own.
After each team opened the first quarter with three goals, the Rams outscored the Gaels 4-2 in the second frame to bring a two point lead into the third quarter. The Gaels stormed back with five goals in the third and held a two goal lead of their own heading into the final quarter. A relentless Fordham attack resulted in a 4-2 quarter for the Rams to send the game into overtime. The Rams took a 14-12 lead after the first overtime and the Gaels were unable to come back from there.
Freshman Kristian Bocage, junior Andrew Velasquez and sophomores Matt Joslyn and Cameron Hudson were responsible for the additional Iona tallies. Joslyn and sophomore Ryan Oldendorf each had an assist apiece. Junior goalkeeper Eric Konzem had eight saves in net for Iona.
The Gaels compete in the CWPA Northern Division Championship next weekend beginning November 7.
