CAMBRIDGE, MA - The Iona College men's water polo team dropped its third contest of the year to Fordham by a score of 12-9 at the 2009 Men's Eastern Championship hosted by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
The Rams never trailed in the game opening up a 2-0 lead by the end of the first period and carried a 5-1 advantage into halftime.
Iona was never able to overcome the deficit as the Gaels closed to within 5-3 and 6-4, but a late run by the Rams in which Fordham outscored Iona 4-1 during the final 4:42 of the third period gave the Rams a 10-5 lead through 24 minutes of play.
The Rams put the game away in the first four minutes of the fourth period as Tim Simo netted a tally at 6:41. Matt Joslyn countered with a man-up score at 6:18 and Seth Tasman chipped in an advantage score of his own at 5:16 to move the Gaels to within 11-7.
Iona attempted to rally back into the contest with a man-up score at the 1:01 mark as Joslyn flipped in his game-high fifth marker of the day, but the Fordham defense would yield only one more score when Cody Siemeck uncorked a blast from the wing for the 12-9 final.
The Gaels next take on MIT at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday in the seventh place game.
