Box Score ALBANY, NY - Freshman Scott Machado tallied 14 points in the Iona College men's basketball team's 43-40 loss to Marist in the opening round of the 2009 MAAC Championship at the Times Union Center.  The Gaels end the season with a 12-19 record.

The two teams played to a 21-21 tie after the first half.   The Gaels scored the last six points of the half to even the score heading into the intermission.

After an evenly matched opening eight minutes of the second half, Iona went on a scoring drought and allowed Marist to score eight straight to make the score 38-30 with 7:30 to play.  The Gaels scored the game's next seven points to pull within one point at the 5:18 mark.  That would be as close as they would get, however as Marist opened up a 43-37 advantage at 2:36.  Machado pulled Iona to within three points with less than a minute to play but could not find the equalizer.

Machado shot 5-of-10 from the field and had three rebounds and three assists.  Freshman Jermel Jenkins and senior Gary Springer each had eight points in the loss.  Springer added eight rebounds in his final game in Maroon & Gold.

Marist was led by senior Ryan Schneider and junior David Devezin with 14 points each.
