FAIRFIELD, CT - The Iona College women's swimming and diving team split at Fairfield on Saturday. The Gaels defeated the Stags by the score of 147 - 135, but were defeated by Loyola 154 - 128.
"This was a needed test for us, we're over our peak training and were able to identify some things we need to fine tune and we will in the next two weeks before the MAAC Championships in Loyola," said coach Nick Cavataro. "We will be ready."
In the 200 meter medley relay, the team of Kelsie Johnson, Jamie Manser, Sam Cody and Theresa Harvey took third with a time of 2:05.84, breaking the previous school mark of 2:08.58. The team of Brittany Freeman, Sarah Walker, Christine Williams and Megan McNeely finished fifth with a time of 2:10.83.
In the 800 meter freestyle, Victoria Ponzo claimed second with a time of 9:29.73, breaking the previous school mark of 9:33.30. Christine Larkin was third with a time of 9:32.98.
Mackenzie Mone took second in the 200 meter freestyle with a time of 2:11.14, breaking the previous school mark of 2:14.54. Kara Nowakowski was seventh with a time of 2:17.20.
In the 100 meter backstroke, Freeman took third with a time of 1:10.27, while Johnson was fifth with a time of 1:11.10.
Manser picked up the first win of the day for the Gaels with a victory in the 100 meter breaststroke. Manser clocked in at 1:16.34, breaking the previous school mark of 1:17.57, while Walker was fourth with a time of 1:20.03.
Ponzo was second in her event, the 200 meter butterfly, with a time of 2:27.99, breaking the previous school mark of 2:28.77. Nowakowski was fourth with a time of 2:30.57.
Harvey picked up another Iona victory with a first place finish in the 50 meter freestyle, edging out the second place swimmer by .01 seconds with a time of 27.36, breaking the previous school mark of 27.59. Mone was sixth with a strong 28.54.
Harvey made it back to back wins for the Gaels when she took first in the 100 meter freestyle with a time of 59.49, breaking the previous school mark of 1:00.91. Mone was second with a time of 1:00.92.
In the 200 meter backstroke, Freeman was fourth with a time of 2:29.79, while McNeely was sixth with a time of 2:34.31.
Manser was second with a time of 2:50.06 in the 200 meter breaststroke, with Walker taking fifth in a time of 2:55.01.
Nowakowski took third in the 400 meter freestyle with a time of 4:37.62, breaking the previous school mark of 4:40.81, while Larkin was fourth with a time of 4:40.64.
Cody took third in the 100 meter butterfly with a time of 1:09.64, with Ponzo sixth with a time of 1:10.10.
In the 200 meter IM, Williams was fifth with a time of 2:35.80, while Cody was sixth with a time of 2:36.01.
The Gaels' squad of Mone, Caitlin McGregor, Larkin and Harvey took third in the 400 meter freestyle relay with a time of 4:07.38, breaking the previous school mark of 4:12.57. The time of Johnson, Ponzo, Nowakowski and McNeely was fifth with a time of 4:21.70.
In diving, Briana Gongloff took first in the one meter with a score of 188.95.
The Gaels next compete at the MAAC Championships in Baltimore, MD from Feb. 11 - 13.
