NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College men's water polo team was able to earn a split in its home double header Saturday at the Hynes Athletics Center. In game one, the Gaels were stifled on the offensive end and fell to Brown by the score of 11-6. In game two, the Gaels were able to control the tempo, and boasted the biggest offensive outburst of the season, turning aside Connecticut College 19-5.
Against Brown, the Gaels were able to keep the Bears close in the first half, trailing only 4-2 at half despite being held scoreless in the second quarter. In the second half, Brown outscored Iona 7-4 pulling away with three goals in the fourth.
For Iona, senior Seth Tasman had the Gaels' two goals of the contest. Sophomore Kristian Bocage had a goal and assisted on freshman Lee Stiles' third quarter goal. Juniors Cameron Hudson and Matt Joslyn rounded out the Gaels' score sheet. Freshman Stefen Hill made seven saves in net for the Gaels.
Against Connecticut College, the Gaels were able to control the match from the open, outscoring Connecticut 9-3 in the first half and 10-2 in the second half en route to their highest goal total of the season.
Eleven different players found the net, led by Joslyn's four goals. Tasman had three goals to finish the day with five overall. Sophomore Brandon Crane had two goals and an assist, the first three points of his career, while freshmen Matthew Stelnicki and Paolo McCarty each found the net twice for the Maroon & Gold. Freshman Sean Davis had three points on a goal and two assists while sophomore Joseph De Leone had a goal and an assist. Juniors Michael Jordan, Ryan Scott and Hunter Carrier each had a goal. Freshman Zach Yawn picked up his first collegiate goal for the final Iona tally.
In net, freshmen Tom Gaughan started and stopped four saves. Classmate Ian Redding had six saves in relief duty. The Gaels next travel to California, starting with a contest against Cal Baptist Oct. 7 at 10:00 pm EST.
