BRONX, NY - The Iona College men's water polo team was defeated 13-11 by Fordham University Wednesday night in the Col. Francis B. Messmore Aquatics Center Wednesday night. The loss ends the Gaels' regular season at 5-17 while Fordham improves to 14-13. Iona trailed from start to finish, only able to cut the deficit to one goal throughout the contest.
Fordham jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first quarter until goals from sophomore Kristian Bocage and senior Seth Tasman at the end of the first pulled the Gaels to within one, 3-2, at the end of period.
The Rams scored two early goals in the second to push their lead back to three before a goal by junior Cameron Hudson made it 5-3. Fordham bumped their lead to four by a score of 7-3. The Gaels closed out the half with tallies from sophomore Connor Bracken and Tasman to make it a 7-5 game at the break.
Iona cut the lead to one early in the second half when Bocage found the net 25 seconds into the third quarter. The squads traded goals to make it 8-7 before three Fordham goals gave the Rams an 11-7 lead heading into the fourth.
Fordham jumped out to a five goal lead in the fourth before Hudson had two goals to cut the deficit to three. Fordham found the net once more in the contest. Iona responded with goals from Tasman and Hudson before the Gaels' comeback ran out of time.
The Gaels will return to action on Saturday, November 6th, as they open play at the Northern Division Championship in Cambridge, MA.
