STATEN ISLAND, NY - Despite winning the opening 200 yd medley relay and the closing 400 yd free relay, the Iona College women's swimming and diving team could not hold off the charge of the host Wagner Seahawks Friday evening in their 2010 debut. Wagner won eight of the 14 events en route to a 142.5 - 119.5 victory.
However, Wagner answered right back, winning the first three individual events of the meet (1000-Free, 200-Free and 100-Back), before Manser won the 100-Breast (1:08.98) and Harvey took the 50-Free (25.24). Manser would later win the 200-Breast while Harvey took the 100-Free during the meet.
“I was surprised by Wagner's quality," said head coach
Nick Cavataro. "They had just enough all afternoon to hold us off and we couldn't punch through on top in enough spots."
“We got great efforts from Manser and Harvey, with their two wins a piece,” Cavataro continued. "But, we didn't break Wagner's scoring in enough spots and couldn't come back despite winning both relay events, which usually gives a team enough scoring.”
The Gaels return to the water Tuesday when they host Seton Hall at the Hynes Center Pool at 5:00 pm.
