Box Score CLEVELAND, OH - Raphael Jordan's three-pointer from the wing with time expiring put Bryant ahead of the Iona College men's basketball team 74-72 in the Gaels' second hard-luck loss of the tournament. The Maroon & Gold went winless in three contests at the World Vision Classic.
With Iona clinging to a four-point lead with 36 seconds to play, Bryant's Barry Latham converted three free throws to cut the deficit to one-point with less than 20 ticks left. The Gaels missed two ensuing free throws as the Bulldogs fouled to stop the clock. With less than two seconds on the clock, Jordan heaved the ball over and Iona defender from 22-feet away for the game winner.
The Gaels struggled early, falling behind 9-1 less than six minutes in. The squad rebounded to take a seven-point advantage into halftime. Iona led by as many as 13 in the second half before its shots ceased to fall. The Gaels went nearly 10 minutes with just two field goals between a driving score from junior
Scott Machado that put the team up by 12 with 12:05 to play and back-to-back three pointers by sophomore
Kyle Smyth and Machado with under 2:30 left.
Machado led the way with 16 points for the Gaels. He grabbed seven rebounds and dished out six assists. Smyth posted 14 points while juniors
Jermel Jenkins and
Michael Glover had 12 points apiece in the loss. Junior
Randy Dezouvre had eight points off the bench.
Frankie Dobbs had 20 points and Jordan posted 14 in win for the Bulldogs.
The Gaels return to New Rochelle for their 2010 home opener against Richmond on Thursday (Nov. 18) at 7:30 pm.
