NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College women's swimming and diving team opened Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action Friday evening with a time with Manhattan. Iona touched first in all 16 women's races en route to a 155-97 win.
The Gaels opened the evening with a win in the 200 yd medley relay. The "A" relay of freshman Maria Skeivys, junior Jamie Manser, senior Sam Cody and freshman Kerri-Anne Dodenhoff was first with a time of 1:55.81. The "B" relay of sophomore Kelsie Johnson, sophomore Zuzanna Michalak, freshman Sophia Hyokyvaara and senior Sarah Walker was second in the event with a time of 1:57.85.
Iona took the top two spots in the first individual event, the 1000 yd free. Sophomore Victoria Ponzo was first with a time of 11:16.64. Senior Christine Williams was second with a time of 11:28.29.
The Gaels swept the top three spots in the 200 yd free, beginning with first place finished junior Mackenzie Mone. Mone touched the wall with a time of 1:59.56. Freshman Brigette Doughty finished second with a time of 2:01.23. Rounding out the top three sweep for the Gaels was senior Christine Larkin, who touched the wall with a time of 2:08.24.
Skeivys picked up an individual win with a first place finish in the 100 yd backstroke. Skeivys finished in a time of 1:04.04. Just behind her in second was Johnson with a time of 1:04.34.
Another top three sweep for the Gaels occured in the 100 yd breaststroke. Manser was the top finisher in the event with a time of 1:09.56. Dodenhoff was second with a time of 1:09.69 and Walker was third with a time of 1:10.56.
In the 200 yd fly, Ponzo took first with a time of 2:17.01. Cody was third with a time of 2:17.71 and sophomore Kara Nowakowski was fourth, finishing with a time of 2:19.60.
Mone took first in the 50 yd free with a time of 26.15. Dodenhoff took second, touching the wall in 26.42 with Williams just behind in third with a time of 27.31.
Mone quickly came back and won her next event, the 100 yd free. Mone touched the wall with a time of 56.30 with Doughty behind her in second with a time of 56.99. Larkin was third with a time of 1:00.77.
Skeivys was first in the 200 yd backstroke with a time of 2:18.19. Johnson finished the event with a time of 2:22 and Nowakowski clocked in with a time of 2:26.24.
Walker took first in the 200 yd breaststroke with a time of 2:33.72. Michalak touched the wall in 2:37.58 and freshman Marcela Dias finished with a time of 2:55.85.
In the 500 yd free, Doughty clocked in with a time of 5:21.26 with Ponzo finishing with a time of 5:34.46. Larkin was the next Iona finisher, finishing with a time of 5:38.61.
Cody was the top Iona finisher in the 100 yd fly with a time of 1:03.90. Manser was just behind with a time of 1:04.83 and Hyokyvaara finished the event in 1:06.40.
Michalak finished the 200 yd IM with a time of 2:20.60 with Hyokyvaara behind her with a time of 2:24.76.
The relay squad of Manser, Doughty, Dodenhoff and Mone finished the 200 yd free relay with a time of 1:44.46. The Iona relay of Skeivys, Walker, Williams and Larkin touched in a time of 1:47.31.
The Gaels are back in action Nov. 13 when they travel to Buffalo, NY to take on Canisius, with events beginning at 10:00 am.
