NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College volleyball team completed its home schedule with a three-set win over Saint Peter's in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action at the Hynes Center. The Gaels (17-9, 11-5 MAAC) solidified their second place standing a one-game lead in the loss column with two matches left in the season. The Maroon & Gold topped the Peahens (6-21, 2-14 MAAC) 25-18, 31-29, 25-16.
Freshman OH
Alicja Pawelec and sophomore OH
Theresa Harvey each posted 11 kills in the win. Pawelec hit .375 for the match on 24 attempts with just two errors. Harvey completed her sixth double-double of the season with 11 digs to go along with a team-best four aces.
In the middle, seniors
Colleen Genett and
Rachel Whitten each had seven kills. Genett, named MAAC Offensive Player of the Week for the first time in her career earlier in the day, continued her stellar play with a match-high .538 hitting percentage. She had zero errors in 13 attempts and had two blocks. Whitten had a team-best three blocks in the win. Rookie RS
Kelsey Hess posted eight kills and hit .421 in the match.
Senior S
Alyssa Erickson posted 29 assists and seven digs playing the first and third sets. Junior S
Nicole Tamburri 12 assists and four digs in the middle frame.
Senior libero
Allison Nieters averaged 9.0 digs per set. The 27 digs put her over the 2,600 mark for her career and moved her two spots on the NCAA All-Time digs list. She stands at No. 5 with 2,606 career digs. Senior DS
Laura Fojanesi also reached double-digits in digs with 11.
Saint Peter's' Stephanie Phillips posted eight kills and four blocks, libero Katie McFadden had 17 digs and Chloe Rost a match-best seven blocks for the visitors.
The Gaels complete the regular season on the road next weekend with matches at Siena and Rider before heading to the 2010 MAAC Championship at the Milk House in Disney's Wide World of Sports in Lake Buena Vista, FL from Nov. 18-20.
