WEST POINT, NY - The Iona College volleyball team split its first two contests of the season, falling to St. John's and defeating Fairleigh Dickinson at the Army Invitational. Both matches lasted four sets.
In the invitational opener at 10 am, the Gaels got off to the hot start, winning the first set, 25-22. The Red Storm won the final 23-25, 20-25, and 20-25.
The Red Storm were led by Paulina Piezga and Sabina Papala's 12 kills.
In the nightcap at 5 pm, the Maroon & Gold took sets one, two and four in the 3-1, 25-20,25-19,22-25,25-22 match win.
Genett posted 16 kills and three blocks for a match best 17.5 points. Harvey, Pawelec and Schornack each had nine kills each. Whitten and Nieters had three aces in the victory. Erickson posted a double-double with 36 assists and 15 digs, matching a career-high in the defensive statistic.
Harvey also matched a career-high in digs with 19. Nieters posted 17 while Schornack had 13 and senior DS
Laura Fojanesi had 10.
Iona completes action at West Point tomorrow at 12:30 pm when they face host Army at Gillis Field House.
