PRINCETON, NJ - The Iona College men's water polo team split a pair CWPA North-South crossover games on Saturday at DeNunzio Pool. The Gaels defeated George Washington 10-6 before falling to No. 14 Princeton 19-9.
Against George Washington, the Colonials and Gaels were even at 2-2 through eight minutes, but Iona surged ahead with a four-goal run in the second stanza and never looked back.
Senior
Cameron Hudson had three goals to lead the Gaels on offense and added one steal and one field block on defense. Sophomore
Lee Stiles had two goals, one steal and drew one kickout. Freshman
Ian Thompson had one goal, one assist and drew one kickout while classmates
Jake Lloyd and
Tyler Mancuso each had one goal. Also finding the goal for Iona was senior
Matt Joslyn and sophomore
Sean Davis, who each had one goal and two field blocks. Sophomore
Matthew Stelnicki had one steal and one field block on defense for the Maroon & Gold. Sophomore
Stefen Hill stopped 17 shots for Iona in net.
"It was a great defensive effort," commented head coach
Brian Kelly. "We were all on the same page, as we started to communicate more in the water and it showed in our seven steals and seven field blocks."
Against Princeton, the Gaels took an early 1-0 lead in the game, but watched as Princeton scored the next 10 goals to build a lead. Princeton led 3-1 after a quarter and 8-1 at the half.
Leading the Gaels was Hudson's five goals. Stelnicki and Lloyd each found the net once as did freshman
Kyle Elmore and junior
Kevin Caulfield. Hill made seven saves in three quarters of play while sophomore
Ian Redding made one save in a relief effort.
