Strong Performance By Gaels in Quad-Meet

NEW ROCHELLE, NY – Junior Briana Gongloff won both of her events on the diving board, as the Iona College women's swimming and diving team won two of three dual style meets on Saturday afternoon at the Hynes Aquatic Center. 

The Gaels easily picked up victories against Northeast Conference members St. Francis College (NY), 193-38, and Sacred Heart University, 157-73, but fell to Wagner College, 159-84. 

Gongloff opened the event scoring 200 points in the one-meter board and then completed the diving portion with a 173.49 on the three-meter board. Sophomore Melanie Dilascio finished third in both events, scoring a 147.25 on the one-meter and a 146.96 atop three meters.

Senior Jamie Manser was the only Iona swimmer to win an individual event, as she took the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:30.10.  

Iona had a great finished in the 400-yard as the team of sophomores Kerri-Anne Dodenhoff, Brigitte Doughty, freshman Olivia Kroll and senior anchor Caitlin McGregor barley edged out sacred Heart at 3:49.89 for second place. 

Kroll and Doughty, also had third place finishes in the 200-yard backstroke and 500-yard freestyle, respectively, as Kroll finished in 2:16.59 and Doughty came in at 5:26.47. 

McGregor (2:03.33) and Kroll (2:04.78) finished third and fourth, respectively in the 200-yard freestyle. Doughty also gave her squad points in the 1000-yard freestyle finishing fourth at 11:08.22. 

Iona also had a second place finish in the 400-yard medley relay, as the unit of seniors Mackenzie Mone and Manser, along with sophomores Maria Skeivys and Sophia Hyokyvaara finished at 4:04.60. 

Mone, then had a strong finish in the 100-yard freestyle and finished third. She rallied from fourth place after the turn and touched the finish line at :54.64. Mone then came in third in the 50-yard freestyle at 25.58. 

Skeivys took third place in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:16.29. 

In the 200-yard Butterfly, junior Victoria Ponzo finished in third at 2:17.80, just one second short of the second place finisher from Wagner. 

The Gaels will head back into the pool on Tuesday evening as they travel to Seton Hall for a 5 p.m. start.
