CAMBRIDGE, MA - The Iona College men's water polo team earned a trip to next weekend's Eastern Championship with an 8-7 win over fifth seeded Fordham in the first round of the CWPA Northern Division Championship Saturday morning.
Fordham opened the contest with a 4-3 lead after the first quarter, but Iona would knot the score at five by halftime. Each team netted a goal in the third quarter, but it was Iona that scored twice in the fourth quarter to Fordham's one for the 8-7 victory.
Sophomore
Lee Stiles led the Gaels with four goals, and added three steals and one field block on defense. Senior
Cameron Hudson had two goals and one assist along with two steals and two ejections drawn. Classmate
Matt Joslyn had one goal and two steals. Freshman
Jake Lloyd had the final Iona tally along with one assist, one steal and two field blocks. Sophomore
Stefen Hill had 12 saves in net for the Gaels.
Later in the day, the Gaels fell to number one seed St. Francis (NY) 13-3, earning a place in the third place game Sunday morning against No. 6 Harvard at 10:30 am.
