ANNAPOLIS, MD - The Iona College men's water polo team opened up its 2011 campaign with a pair of wins at the Navy Labor Day Open. In game one, fourteen different Gaels found the net as they defeated Notre Dame 20-8. In game two, the Gaels scored twice in the final two minutes to escaped with a 12-11 win over Vanguard.
In net, sophomore
Stefen Hill had six saves and two steals in three quarters of play.
Against Vanguard, with the game tied at 10, the Gaels used a goal by Bocage to move ahead by one before the Lions knotted up the score seconds later. A final tally by Bocage in the final two minutes pushed the Maroon & Gold to the one goal victory.
Along with his two goals, Bocage also assisted on another goal to finish the game with three points. Stiles had three goals, along with three steals in the win. Elmore had two goals as well as one defensive steal. Stelnicki had two points on a goal and an assist along with two steals. Lloyd, Joslyn, Mancuso and Hudson each had one goal with Hudson finishing 3/4 on swimoff opportunities. Sophomore
Bryan Driscoll had one assist for the Gaels.
Hill continued his strong day with 10 saves in the win to go along with three steals and two assists.
The Gaels wrap up their weekend in Annapolis with a matchup against Diablo Valley College Sunday at noon.
