Gaels Open Up Season With Two Wins

ANNAPOLIS, MD - The Iona College men's water polo team opened up its 2011 campaign with a pair of wins at the Navy Labor Day Open.  In game one, fourteen different Gaels found the net as they defeated Notre Dame 20-8.  In game two, the Gaels scored twice in the final two minutes to escaped with a 12-11 win over Vanguard.

In game one, freshman Jake Lloyd had four points in his Iona debut on three goals and one assist. Defensively, he added two steals.  Classmate Tyler Mancuso also had two steals and found the net twice in his first game for Iona.  Junior Kristian Bocage also had two steals and two goals while sophomore Matthew Stelnicki also had two goals.  Senior Ryan Scott had three points on one goal and two assists, and drew one kickout.  Senior Matt Joslyn led off his final campaign with a goal and two assists along with one kickout drawn and two steals.  Senior Cameron Hudson and freshman Kyle Elmore each had one goal and one assist, with Hudson adding three steals.  Juniors Kevin Caulfield, Joseph De Leone and Cody Siemeck also found the net for Iona. Siemeck was also responsible for a steal and field block on defense.  Sophomores Jonathan Hernould and Lee Stiles each had one goal along with freshman Nicholas Joslyn.  Junior Connor Bracken drew two kickouts for the Gaels.

In net, sophomore Stefen Hill had six saves and two steals in three quarters of play. 

Against Vanguard, with the game tied at 10, the Gaels used a goal by Bocage to move ahead by one before the Lions knotted up the score seconds later. A final tally by Bocage in the final two minutes pushed the Maroon & Gold to the one goal victory.

Along with his two goals, Bocage also assisted on another goal to finish the game with three points.  Stiles had three goals, along with three steals in the win.  Elmore had two goals as well as one defensive steal.  Stelnicki had two points on a goal and an assist along with two steals.  Lloyd, Joslyn, Mancuso and Hudson each had one goal with Hudson finishing 3/4 on swimoff opportunities.  Sophomore Bryan Driscoll had one assist for the Gaels.

Hill continued his strong day with 10 saves in the win to go along with three steals and two assists.

The Gaels wrap up their weekend in Annapolis with a matchup against Diablo Valley College Sunday at noon.
